Volunteer Treasurer

Location: Toronto, ON, hybrid
Commitment: Part-time Volunteer Position. Approximately 4 hours a week.

Role Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Treasurer to manage the finances of our charity and work closely with our accountant to maintain accurate financial records. As a key member of our leadership team, you will help ensure that Don’t Mess with the Don is financially sustainable and compliant with charity regulations.

Key Responsibilities

• Financial Oversight: Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of the organization’s financial activities. 

• Payments Management: Handle both incoming payments such as donations and grants and outgoing payments such as expenses and reimbursements.

• Budgeting: Assist in preparing and managing the annual budget in collaboration with the Board of Directors.

• Bookkeeping: Work with our accountant to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting, including tracking income and expenses.

• Payroll Management: Oversee the payment of salaries and ensure timely payroll remittances to the CRA.

• Reporting: Prepare financial reports for board meetings, the annual general meeting, and financial reports required by grants.

• Compliance: Ensure the charity complies with all legal and regulatory financial obligations, including filing reports with the CRA.

• Fund Management: Oversee management of grants, donations, and other income streams, ensuring proper allocation and use of funds.

Qualifications

• Experience in finance, accounting, or bookkeeping (experience in the nonprofit or charity sector is a bonus).

• Familiarity with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks) is preferred but not required.

• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

• Ability to commit to quarterly board meetings and occasional financial reporting deadlines.

Don’t Mess with the Don is a Toronto-based environmental charity dedicated to preserving and restoring the health of the Don Valley. We engage with the community through clean-up events, stewardship programs, and various outdoor activities that encourage active participation in caring for our local natural spaces. Our organization is active in six program areas: Garbage clean up, Nature Stewardship, Youth Trail Running, Mountain Biking, Kayaking and Family Environmental Arts and Educational Programming.
