Cleaning Up the Don Valley
The waste we saw in the valley was what first inspired us to form Don’t Mess with the Don. It seemed everywhere we looked there was garbage and the problem was only getting worse so we knew we had to do something about it. Eight years on and we’ve completed over 200 clean ups removing thousands of pounds of garbage including everything from shopping carts to tires and we’re not stopping there! We run regular clean ups throughout the year as well as the occasional extra pop up clean up.
As well as cleaning up garbage we want to stop it from ever reaching the valley. Garbage comes from many sources and sometimes isn’t from people littering, though does occur. Upstream sources can include re-garbage, where dumpsters from residential buildings are not fit for purpose meaning strong winds blow the garbage into the valley. We are working with the city and with private buildings and business to address these upstream sources but it’s a lengthy process so in the meantime we’ll continue to do our clean ups for as long as we’re needed!
Don’t Mess with Our Waterfront
On June 25th, the DMWTD Board and community will come together for a clean up of Biidaasige and Port Lands and then afterwards gather to say NO to the expansion of Billy Bishop Airport.
The entire DMWTD Board will be there to speak out and DEMAND that our Federal MP's and elected officials end any expansion of the Island Airport. For nearly 9 years, DMWTD volunteers have put in 100,000's of hours to protect our environment and build a grassroots community.
The proposed expansion will devastate Toronto's Waterfront, severely impacting delicate and vital green spaces, waterways and treasured areas we fiercely love. Toronto Islands, Biidaasige Park, Western Beaches and the Don River will suffer permanent adverse impacts. The very spaces where communities like DMWTD gather to find recreation, joy and one another will be diminished. The critical habitat that our wildlife calls home will be irreparably harmed.
7 to 7:45 pm - Clean up of the Port Lands and Biidassige, meet at Old Fire Hall 30 here.
7:45 to 8:15 pm - Gather in front of the Biidassige Visitor Centre (Old Firehall) to say "NO"
